How It Works
You sign the power of attorney in front of a California notary, who completes a California acknowledgment. The Secretary of State then apostilles the notary’s signature. Do not sign the document before your appointment; the notary needs to watch you sign.
The notarial wording must be in English, but the power of attorney itself can be in Spanish, Italian or any other language, which is often what the foreign attorney or notary drafted. Bring their draft as is.
Things That Catch People Out
- Names must match your passport. Foreign registries compare every letter, including middle names.
- Some countries want specific wording, such as express authority to sell or to sign before a local notary. Have your lawyer abroad approve the draft before you sign.
- Bring every page. Loose or unnumbered pages invite rejection; we keep the document together.
We Can Come to You
If the signer is elderly, unwell or busy, our mobile service brings the notary to a home, office, hospital or care facility in the Santa Barbara area. We notarize there and take the document for the apostille.
