At a glance
Citizenship by Descent
A citizenship application usually needs certified records for each generation between you and your Italian-born ancestor: births, marriages, divorces and deaths, plus evidence of whether the ancestor naturalized in the U.S. and when. Each U.S. record is apostilled by the state that issued it, so a family spread across states means several Secretaries of State. California records are what we apostille here.
Italy narrowed citizenship by descent in 2025. Check your eligibility with the consulate or an Italian citizenship lawyer before ordering a full set.
Getting the Records Right
- Order full certified copies, not abstracts.
- Look for spelling differences (Giuseppe on one record, Joseph on another). Italian offices may ask for amendments or a “one and the same person” affidavit.
- Apostille, then translate. Translations normally cover the apostille too.
Residency and Property
Elective residency and other visas, buying property, and inheritance often call for apostilled powers of attorney, marriage certificates and, for some visas, background checks.
Consulate
Most Central Coast residents fall under the consulate in Los Angeles, but districts vary, so check the consulate’s website for which office covers your county.
